Meeting About Phase II of Center for the Contemporary Arts

An open meeting for the community will be held to hear a presentation about Phase II of the Center for Contemporary Arts on Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. Architects for Holzman-Moss will present the building design. University personnel will be available to answer questions about the project.

Phase II of the Center for Contemporary Arts is slated to be built on Shepherd's West Campus at the intersection of W.Va. 480, Shepherd Grade Road and West Campus Drive. The second phase of the building, funded by an $11 million state appropriation, will include classroom spaces for sculpture and graphic design.

 

Shepherd Receives $220,000 from U.S Department of Education

Shepherd University is one of eight West Virginia colleges and universities that will receive $220,000; $2,350,373 total; in grant money through the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services program, and Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Carte Goodwin, both D-W.Va., applauded the news Wednesday.

These funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education, according to a news release.

 

Volunteers Sought for 2010 Book Sale

The Shepherdstown Men's Club is clearing the decks and organizing to prepare for this year's Used Book Sale that will be held at the War Memorial Building Oct. 22-24.

The annual event which is one of the Club's primary fund raisers is also an important community social activity.

New Liquor Store in Shepherdstown

Shepherdstown soon will be the home of a new liquor store. The store, One Stop Liquor and More, will be located in a commercial building at 207 S. Princess St., next to H-Mart and the current site of the Shepherdstown Police Station. The business is owned by Mohsen Sadegazadeh.

The store has been approve by the town council and now the Retail Liquor License Board will inspect the location and conduct a background check on Sadegazadeh before a retail liquor license can be issued.

Jefferson County Commission Holding Quarry Meetings

The Jefferson County Commission is inviting the public to learn more about the recently approved Brownfield Economic Development District at Old Standard Quarry near Harpers Ferry.

In March 2009, the West Virginia Department of Commerce approved an application for a Brownfield Economic Opportunity Development District at Old Standard Quarry, which includes 29 office buildings, a first-class hotel, an extended-stay hotel, a computer data center and the wastewater treatment plant that is adjacent to the quarry lake.
