Kate Walsh has recently been hired as a national board certified massage therapist at Shepherd's Wellness Center. Walsh has been practicing her craft for over four years and uses various techniques in her approach to natural healing, with certifications in Swedish, Myofacial and deep tissue massage.
Walsh attended the Shenandoah Valley School of Massage Therapy, an institution that emphasizes the highest standards of integrity, quality of bodywork, and specific knowledge of the human anatomy. Since graduating, she has expanded her knowledge by securing certifications in sports therapy massage, hot stone massage, and equissage. She is also continuing her education in homeopathy and naturopathy.
Walsh enjoys educating and assisting others in appreciating the benefits of massage therapy as an alternative form of healthcare in an effort to help them maintain balance in their lives. "I think it [having Walsh on campus] is a nice addition to a new facility. I've never tried natural healing remedies, I've always gone to doctors, so this is something new that I would like to try," said junior Sarah Risinger.
Member rates for massage start at: $20.00 for a 30 minute "relax your back" massage, $55.00 for a 60 minute massage, $80.00 for a 90 minute massage, and $100.00 for a 120 minute massage. Student rates are: $20.00 for 30 minutes, $40.00 for 60 minutes, $60.00 for 90 minutes, and $80 for 120 minutes. Walsh can be reached at (757)435-4357 or found in the Wellness Center.
While prices are comparatively lower for students, not every student feels that it is a bargain. "I do not feel that students will use the services if they have to pay for it," said senior student Kalie Potter. Senior student Jessica Muth believes that many students do not use the incentives the campus has to offer. However, there are students who believe the new addition is greatly needed and beneficial, especially to certain students such as athletes. "It is good that the Wellness Center is now offering a massage therapist. Massage therapy can be good for helping and preventing injuries," said Kyle Hendrickson, an alumni and current Wellness Center member.
