The Women's basketball season got off on the wrong foot with a double overtime loss to the Shippensburg Red Raiders, losing 94-92.
The Red Raiders' Shawna Wert made a lay-up in the finals second to give Shippensburg an upset victory, but the Rams aren't letting one game cloud what is a long season ahead.
"It's just the first game of the season, but as tough as it is to lose, it was a learning experience and we know where we stand," sophomore guard Emily Daniel said.
The Rams held at 40-37 at the end of a first half but couldn't pull away from the Red Raiders in regulation or in overtime.
Senior guard Carrie Saunders was 8-13 shooting as she led the Rams with 25 points, going 5-7 from beyond the arc.
Shepherd also saw large contribution from freshman forward Jimyse Brown, who played 26 minutes and scored 26 points and brought down six rebounds.
Senior guard Jerica Hewett scored eight points while bringing down a team high seven rebounds, and tied with junior guard Jenn Prine for the lead in assists with four.
Shepherd coach Melanie Ford stressed the fact that then opening loss doesn't slow down what hopes to be a productive season for the Rams.
"A lot of things went right, it was heart breaking to give them enough time to get a shot off," Ford said, "But being the first game with all the heart and intensity they put in, that's what we'll need."
The women will head on the road Wednesday to face Alderson-Broaddus in the Rams first conference and road game of the season.
